The wildlife department has dug seven deep zigzag-shaped trenches in the eco-sensitive zone of Kalesar National Park near Faizpur village in Yamunanagar district. The action was taken after allegations that the mining mafia was using certain routes through the eco-sensitive zone to carry out illegal mining of sand and gravel from the Yamuna river, which flows close to the village.

The trenches are intended to block the movement of vehicles allegedly used for illegal extraction of sand, gravel and boulders from the river, mostly during night hours.

The department had earlier dug trenches on some routes in the eco-sensitive zone in May this year. However, illegal mining reportedly continued through alternate paths, prompting authorities to intensify preventive measures.

Umesh Bhatti, Deputy Ranger (Wildlife), Kalesar National Park, said the Yamuna river stretch near Faizpur village fell within the eco-sensitive zone, where mining is strictly prohibited. He said seven deep zigzag trenches had been created at multiple points to curb illegal activity.

He added that the department was committed to protecting the eco-sensitive zone and preserving the fragile ecosystem around Kalesar National Park.

“The movement of heavy vehicles towards the Yamuna river has been completely stopped. Strict monitoring will continue and anyone found violating the rules or involved in illegal mining will face legal action,” Bhatti said.
