
As many as 79 candidates in fray for the urban civic body polls will be elected unopposed.
Majority of these candidates belong to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
Besides, 2,393 candidates, in fray for the upcoming polls on May 26, have withdrawn their candidature.
This leaves 7,623 candidates in the election arena.
These polls, because of being so close to the next Assembly election, are being fought with grave intensity by all political parties in the state.
Information available with The Tribune from the State Election Commission shows that maximum number of candidates who have no opponents contesting against them are in the 75 Municipal Councils that go to polls (47 candidates), followed by 28 in 21 Nagar Panchayats and only four in the eight municipal corporations.
The highest number of withdrawals has been in the Municipal Councils (1,695), followed by 386 in Municipal Corporations and 312 in Nagar Panchayats.
