Man, 57, fined for having illegal gambling paraphernalia

A 57-year-old man was fined RM1,200 or one month jail by the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for having illegal gambling paraphernalia.

Chong Shie Hiung pleaded guilty before Magistrate Afiq Agoes to having three lottery slips at 3pm on Jan 22 this year at a restaurant in Donggongon Point in Penampang.

According to the prosecution, Chong was detained by police after the gambling paraphernalia including a handphone, lottery tickets and RM217, were found on him which were later seized.

The charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

The court ordered the seized money to be disposed of by the prosecution.

In another case, a 52-year-old man was ordered to pay a fine of RM25 or one week jail for threatening a man with intention to frighten him.

Tan Lai Tuan admitted to committing the offence by saying “Tidak payah saya lawan sama lu, kasi tembak saja pun mati juga (I don’t have to fight you, just shoot and you’re dead too)” to one Hong Kian Eng at 4.30pm on Aug 25 at a restaurant in Beverly Hills in Penampang.

The charge under Section 8(1)(e) of the Minor Offences Ordinance provides for a fine of RM25 or jail not more than a week on conviction.

Meanwhile, nine people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.

John Peter and Juraya Abib pleaded guilty to having 0.05gm and 0.07gm of syabu respectively on July 14 and July 18.

John was sentenced to 11 months while Juraya was handed 10 months jail.

To another drug offence, John, Norhan Suwaed, Julkin Haidal, Ng Chee Chiang, Wan Ariff, Freddanny Jabbie, Zulkifli Idris and Mohammad Husin admitted to taking syabu at separate locations between June 29 and July 23.

John was handed eight months jail, while Norhan, Julkin, Freddanny, Zulkifli and Mohammad received seven months jail each. Ng and Wan were fined RM1,700 and RM1,600 each or eight months jail.

John was ordered to serve his sentences concurrently.
