Two cops nabbed for trying to extort RM5,000

Kota Kinabalu: Two policemen were detained for trying to extort RM5,000 from two individuals to escape arrest for having prohibited items in Sandakan.

It was understood officers from the Sandakan branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) hauled in the policemen, a sergeant and a corporal, aged 57 and 35, at 9.50pm, on Friday.

It was learnt the suspects had committed the act last Monday.

The policemen are alleged to have compelled the individuals to cough up the money so that action would not be taken against them for owning the banned items.

Sabah MACC Director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest, saying the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
