Stateless kids: Dept, local councils responsible

Kota Kinabalu: The local authorities together with the Sabah Welfare Department are responsible for tackling the street children issue in their respective districts.

 State Community Development and People’s Wellbeing Minister Shahelmey Yahya (pic) said the children are divided into two categories.

 “If they are Malaysians, the Welfare Department will bring them to the Desa Bina Diri institution,” he told Elopura’s Calvin Chong Ket Kiun during question time at the State Assembly.

 “If non-citizens, then they will be handed over to the Immigration Department or the relevant authorities.”
