TAWAU: The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) field hospital here managed to treat 1,110 patients since it began operations 55 days ago, said hospital commander Colonel Dr Shamsul Bahary Muhamad.

He said 90 per cent of daily admissions comprised postpartum women as well surgical and oncology cases involving treatment and chemotherapy.

“The 100-bed capacity field hospital prioritises safety and comfort, with multi-discipline wards and support services,” he told reporters Monday after an event to honour the 18 Ministry of Health (MOH) staff who will be ending their deployment at the hospital on Dec 20.

Dr Shamsul Bahary said the hospital managed to treat all the chronic cases without having to refer them to other hospitals, except for eight unstable cases which were transferred to the Tawau Hospital for surgery.

Meanwhile, he said there has been no new directive regarding the operation of the field hospital, which was activated on Oct 20 to treat non-Covid-19 cases and expected to be closed in January next year as decided previously.

“So far, we have not received any directive whether the period of operation will be extended or if it will be handed over to the management of the Tawau Hospital, but we understand that this will be reviewed at the end of this month,” he said.
