Health system at ‘breaking point’ from Covid-19, says Muhyiddin

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has warned that the public healthcare system is at “breaking point” in the face of a worsening Covid-19 crisis.

In a televised address this evening, Muhyiddin said health ministry facilities can no longer cope with over 2,000 new cases a day.

Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Universiti Malaya Medical Centre had reached 100% usage of beds in intensive care units, while in Sungai Buloh, it has reached 83%.”

ICU bed usage for Covid-19 patients in Perak, Selangor, Melaka, Terengganu and Sarawak had surpassed 70%.

He said the 15 Covid-19 hospitals had filled over 70% of beds for non-intensive care.

“At this point in time there are more than 1,450 medical frontliners who have been infected or have to undergo quarantine and cannot serve.”

Muhyiddin said flooding in several states and the increase in cases has made it difficult to mobilise resources among states and increase the number of ICU beds for critical patients.

“Our healthcare system is at breaking point.”

In his address, Muhyiddin also announced a movement control order for five states, the federal territories, and a ban on interstate travelling.
