Gambling: Five fined a total of RM5,800

Kota Kinabalu: Five people were fined a total of RM5,800 by the Magistrate’s Court on Friday for engaging in gambling activities.

Dyg Suhana Saiful, 28, Khairunisah Nadiah Herman, 31, Aszhilah Kabing, 19, Nichole Andreson Sylvester, 20, and Hizriyatul Peter Abdullah, 19, pleaded before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to committing the offence between Nov 21, 2020 and Feb 6, 2021.

Suhana and Nichole were charged with having lottery tickets without licence while Khairunisah, Aszhilah and Hizriyatul were accused of engaging in online gambling through Kiss918 application using their respective smartphones.

Suhana was fined RM1,500 or two months jail for having four slips of lottery tickets without a licence at 6.25pm on Feb 6 this year at a snooker premises at University Utama Square in Telipok.

Nichole was fined RM1,000 or two months jail for having two slips of lottery tickets illegally at 6.18pm on Nov 21, 2020 at the five-foot-way of a shop at the Kepayan low-cost housing.

Khairunisah was fined RM1,300 or two months jail while Ashzilah and Hizriyatul were each fined RM1,000 or two months jail for the online gambling activity committed at Taman Indah Permai in Manggatal, Kepayan Ridge shophouses and in a café in Asia City, on Nov 21, 2020, Jan 24, 2021 and Nov 20, 2020 respectively.

Suhana and Nichole were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which carries a term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, upon conviction.

Khairunisah and Hizriyatul were charged under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, while Ashzilah was charged under Section 7(2) of the same Act, which each provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, upon conviction.

In another case, a 31-year-old unemployed man was charged with threatening to injure a man.

Ong See Eng pleaded not guilty to criminally intimidating Abd Gaffar @ Awang Arshad at 8am on March 17 this year at the SK Tanjung Aru 2 here.

He was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, upon conviction.

The court set April 28 for case management and released Ong on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.
