The France international enjoyed an outstanding campaign on-loan at Fulham from PSG, playing his way into his nation's Euros squad despite the Cottagers' relegation.
A return to PSG has been ruled out, but Areola could yet land himself a big club move to Italy.
Agent Mino Raiola has offered Areola to Mourinho and the Roma coach has recommended to sporting director Tiago Pinto that negotiations commence.
Pinto is in agreement and negotiations are set to kickoff over a permanent transfer after initial contact was established last week.
