Nice have made a bid for Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.
Lemina is available from Southampton after last season's loan with Fulham.
A move to Newcastle United appeared likely before owner Mike Ashley pulled back over Saints' asking price for a player of 27 years.
Instead, Nice are now in contact with Saints and have made an opening offer.
A bid of €4m has been tabled, with Nice waiting on Southampton's response.
