Donny van de Beek and Mason Greenwood started in today's friendly for Manchester United against Stoke City.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used the encounter as an opportunity to field players in need of match fitness who are not currently away on international duty.

United were last in competitive action when they defeated Wolves at Molinuex on Sunday afternoon with many of their star players now away with their respective national teams.

The starting XI for United was: Heaton - Dalot, Jones, Mengi, Fernandez - Matic, Van de Beek, Mata - Cavani, Greenwood, Hannibal.

Speaking last week Solskjaer confirmed the plans to play another friendly match this week.

"There might be a behind-closed-doors game again," the United manager told the club's website.

"It's time to give them some time off as well – the ones who don't go on internationals – because most of them have done the whole pre-season, so they've been working diligently and have been terrific.

“Some of them, when you're an international, then it means you're playing well. The ones who don't have internationals will get the break and they deserve a few days off definitely, then we go again on the Monday.

“We'll have the start of the week training then give them a long weekend off."
