Dutch pundit Valentijn Driessen insists a move to Newcastle United wouldn't be a step down for Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

Everton are set to try again for Van de Beek in January after having a loan deal blocked by United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the final days of the summer market.

However, the Blues will face competition from Newcastle, where the club's new owners are keen.

And Driessen told De Telegraaf: "I think that Van de Beek does not have to give up when he goes to Newcastle.

"(It will be) with a trainer who sees it in him and picks him up for the base.

“But this is a hopeless situation at Manchester United. That boy does nothing. Only financially it is good, but if you can go to Newcastle and they are going to build a nice team there, and they see a good role for you there, then he should always do that. Now he is at a dead end."
