New contract talks between Chelsea and Andreas Christensen have stalled.
The Denmark international will see his terms expire at the end of the campaign and it had been assumed that he would pen a new deal.
Christensen had verbally agreed a new contract earlier in the season but that has since changed, says the Telegraph.
And that threatens his very status at Stamford Bridge and the 25-year-old could now leave for nothing when the season ends.
That would be a huge blow for Thomas Tuchel, who has counted on the centre-back heavily in what has become the best defence in the Premier League.
Christensen and his representatives had agreed on a five-year deal but the goalposts have since changed.
They are now demanding that the contract be shortened to three years, mystifying the Chelsea hierarchy who had been confident that he would put pen to paper soon.
Negotiations have reportedly been called off, leaving the club in a difficult situation.
