RANAU: Another female suffered complications while climbing Mount Kinabalu on Saturday

Ranau Fire and Rescue Chief, Ridwan Mohd Taib said in the latest sixth case this year alone, the climber needed assistance from the Auxiliary Fire Officer Mountain Search and Rescue (MoSAR).

“The incident also involved a female climber like four of the previous cases. This time the victim was a 38-year-old woman who suffered leg cramps and hypothermia while she just started climbing.

“At about 4.20pm on Saturday, our MOSAR team received a report that a Malaysian suffered leg muscle cramps and extreme cold at Km3 while climbing.

“PBB MOSAR personnel brought down the victim, provided initial treatment and escorted her to Timpohon Gate.

“The Ranau EMRS Team took the victim to Mesilou Accommodation or Bridge House,” he said, adding that the operation ended at 10.21pm.

Ridwan repeated his advice to climbers to do self health assessment before climbing.

“There must be mental and physical preparation, and only bring along suitable and necessary items.”

He also advised climbers to be extra careful during the current rainy season because the surface and rocks are more slippery.

“Always climb in groups, don’t walk alone and make sure to be attentive to the guides’ advice to avoid any untoward incidents,” he said.
