RANAU: A man and his dog that were marooned on an “island” in the midst of a raging river managed to walk to safety after the rapids subsided.
Leonard Lawrence, 42, and his dog were trapped on a small spot in the middle of the River Mokodou near Kg Takutan in Perancangan Ranau following a sudden increase in the volume of flow of the river on Sunday afternoon.
Efforts by police and Fire and Rescue team through the night proved fruitless as weather conditions as well as visibility posed a threat even to rescuers.
The rescue operation was postponed just before midnight on Sunday after food supplies managed to be delivered to the cold and frightened victim via highline rope system.
Fortunately, the weather improved on Monday morning, and the victim, along with his dog, managed to cross to safety.
The victim who was relieved after spending the night trapped in the middle of raging water, was later transported by ambulance to the Perancangan Health Clinic for further treatment.
Rescue operation was suspended at about 7.35am.
