Unemployed faces drug trafficking trial, three fined for gambling

Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here Wednesday with trafficking 211.60g of cannabis.

Adrian Crnila Kareem, 29, who was brought before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles, was accused of committing the offence at 3.30pm on Jan 5, this year in a room of a unit at Millennium Court, Jalan Lintas, Kepayan here.

However, no plea was recorded from Adrian after the charge was read out to him. The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life in prison and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes. The prosecution applied for a new mention date while waiting for the chemist’s report and objected bail as the charge has no provision for bail. Lovely set Feb 16 for mention and ordered Adrian, who was represented by counsel Chin Tek Ming be further remanded.

In another case, three people were fined a total of RM3,000 for having gambling paraphernalia. Anastasia Clara, 21, Nur Alisah Tung, 24, and Dyg Masni Abu Bakar, 35, were each ordered to pay a fine of RM1,000 or two months jail.

Anastasia admitted to having two pieces of Wahui riddles at 2.45pm on Feb 6, 2021 at a five-foot-way of a shop in Putatan, Nur Alisah pleaded guilty to having five tickets of Wahui riddles at 1.15pm on Nov 2, last year while Masni admitted to having one Wahui riddles at 3pm on Jan 6 this year at a five-foot-way of a shop in Putatan.

The court heard from the prosecution that the three were arrested by police for committing the offences at the said areas.

The three were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act which carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.
