PETALING JAYA – The Medical Device Authority (MDA) has denied claims that tap water contains traces of COVID-19 following a viral TikTok video posted by @kakwawa3 on Friday (Feb 11).
In a statement, MDA said that test kits that aren’t used according to the instructions or not utilised for its original purpose are bound to show inaccurate and misleading results.
“We take this issue very seriously and will conduct an investigation into the matter to avoid further confusion regarding the use of COVID-19 test kits,” it said.
Although the video has since been deleted, some couldn’t help but to try out the dubious method for themselves and received a positive result too.
However, several netizens pointed out that test kits were never meant to use tap water as a means to detect COVID-19.
In response to the furore, Air Selangor assured Malaysians that all sources of water managed by them have undergone proper handling including chlorine disinfection to eliminate all kinds of bacteria and viruses.
