Sabah’s caseload spikes to 4,892 due to KK backlog

Kota Kinabalu: Cases in the Kota Kinabalu district doubled to 1,947 on Thursday from 735 the day earlier due to backlog, pushing the State’s caseload to 4,892, said Sabah’s Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

“A total of 1,214 out of 1,957 cases in Kota Kinabalu were backlogs that occurred six days ago or longer, but could only be registered on Thursday,” he said.

Seven deaths were recorded throughout Sabah, two in Tuaran and one each in Keningau, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Kota Marudu and Kudat. No new clusters were identified.

Of the caseload, Masidi said 531 cases involved children aged below 11, of which 241 were children aged below five.

He said 64 per cent of cases were sporadic (3,161), while 29.29 per cent were close contacts (1,433). “Nine districts recorded three-digit cases, namely Tuaran (425), Penampang (415), Papar (290), Tawau (208), Kota Belud (207), Beaufort (194), Sandakan (192), Keningau (144) and Lahad Datu (100),” he said.

The majority of cases are mild, with 4,869 out of 4,892 cases being category one and two infections, which is 99.53 per cent.

“There are five cases in category three, 13 in category four and five in category five,” said Masidi.

Some 3,168 Covid-19 patients have been discharged from the hospital, while 2,427 patients are currently receiving treatment at hospitals, low-risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRCs), prisons/temporary detention centres and private facilities.

On Sabah’s immunisation programme, Masidi said 14,274 individuals were vaccinated on Feb 23, of which 11,556 were adults, while 52 were teenagers and 2,666 children. As of Feb 23, he said a total of 2,412,733 individuals have completed both doses, of which 77.27 per cent were adults, while 2,491,979 have gotten their first dose, of which 77.99 per cent were adults.

Masidi added that a total of 338,557 teenagers have received their first dose, while 313,563 have completed both doses, which is 73.57 per cent of the teenage population. A total of 34,713 children have received their first dose.
