Two fined over illegal gambling activities

Kota Kinabalu: Two men were penalised by the Magistrate’s Court here Monday for engaging in illegal gambling.

Zivanny Wong, 31, was ordered to pay a fine of RM2,500 or two months jail after he admitted before magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to engaging in an online gambling via handphone in public.

Wong committed the offence at 6.10pm on Oct 28, 2021 at the foyer seating of Commercial Centre Taman Kepayan Ridge.

The court heard from the prosecution that the police went to the premises following public information on gambling activity and investigated a man, later identified as Wong, who was then found having the online gambling transaction in his handphone.

The police also seized RM210 cash from the illegal activity from Wong, said the prosecution.

Wong was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 which provides for a fine of up RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both on conviction.

Meanwhile, another man, Ramil Radan was fined RM1,200 or three months jail by Senior Assistant Registrar Tiong Wen Wen, who sat as a magistrate, for having four pieces of Wah Hi riddles without licence.

Ramil, 25, admitted to committing the offence at 3.45pm on July 23, last year at Donggongon town, Penampang.

The prosecution told the court that the police team also seized RM77 from Ramil.

Ramil was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act which carries a jail term of up to six months, or fine of up to RM3,000, or both on conviction.

The court ordered the seized money from the cases to be forfeited.
