Woman denies acting as bookmaker

Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old woman was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here Monday with acting as an illegal bookie in a football betting last year.

Nurul Aisyah Hazuani pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to acting as a bookmaker at 5.45pm on June 27, 2021 in front of a stall at Kg Kopungit, Jalan Pintas, here.

The charge under Section 6(3)(a) of the Betting Act 1953 provides for a fine of between RM20,000 and RM200,000 and shall also be jailed up to five years, on conviction. Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuting, in applying for a case management date, proposed bail at RM3,000 in two sureties.

Counsel Mohamad Syazwan Shah Mohamad Ali, representing Nurul, requested for a lower bail on the grounds that she and her husband are currently unemployed and that they have two children. Lovely set March 28 for case management and released Nurul on a bail of RM1,000 in one surety.

In another case, four people were penalised for taking syabu.

Mohd Khairum, Isaiah Emanuel, Alfred Sius and Mohamad Kullaman pleaded guilty to committing the offence under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction.

Khairum and Isaiah were fined RM2,200 or five months jail each, Alfred was ordered to pay a fine of RM2,000 or five months jail while Mohamad was jailed five months.
