Liverpool have missed out on millions after Lyon's sale of Xherdan Shaqiri to Chicago Fire.

However, after less than six months, the 30-year-old has found himself on the move again, this time heading to the MLS with Chicago Fire in a club-record £5.9million deal.

Remarkably, that figure is more than the French club paid for his services back in August.

The Ligue 1 side purchased Shaqiri for a fee in the region of £5m last summer as the Reds agreed for a significant chunk of the transfer to be made up of bonuses.

The structure of the deal means Lyon paid out an initial €6m with another €5m - close to 50% of the initial fee - potentially on top, based on performance-related add-ons, says the Daily Star.

While it remains to be seen what those bonuses entailed, the fact the attacker made a mere 16 appearances for the French side, only scoring twice and assisting on three occasions, suggests Liverpool are likely to miss out on any additional windfall.
