LAHAD DATU: The district marine police (PPM) on Monday successfully foiled an attempt to steal timber in the Tanjung Paras area near here.
The commanding officer of Lahad Datu PPM, Superintendent Gan Ping Sin, said his team came across a boat in a suspicious condition while patrolling the area.
When approached, the owner of the boat tried to flee by jumping into the sea before running into the nearby mangrove area.
“During the inspection of the boat, several tree trunks were found, which are suspected to have been cut and removed from the forest without authorisation.
“The boat was taken to PPM Lahad Datu Operations Headquarters and handed over to the Forest
Department for further action,” he said.
According to Gan, the value of the seized goods is estimated at RM1,450.
The case will be investigated under the Forestry Enactment 1968, he said.
Gan is asking the public to send information on any illegal activities to PPM via the WhatsApp application at 013-939 1197.
