Kota Kinabalu: Two fishing boats were destroyed in a fire (pic) near the Safma Fisheries Complex, here, early Monday.

During the incident at 5.50am, a grocery store located near the two boats also caught fire but was only about 30 per cent damaged.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said they received an emergency call at 5.58am.

He said 23 personnel from the Kota Kinabalu and Lintas Fire and Rescue Stations were deployed to the location.

“Upon arrival at the scene, operations were carried out using two jet streams with water source from the machinery tank and a nearby fire hydrant.

“The fire destroyed two fishing boats, while a nearby grocery store suffered some damage,” he said when contacted.

He said there was a woman trapped in the grocery store who was rescued by firemen.

“No injuries or casualties were reported in the fire. The fire was under control at 6.31am and the operation ended at 10.19am.

“The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still under investigation,” he said.
