KUALA LUMPUR – Young national swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean continued his sterling performance by adding another two gold medals on the fourth day of the 64th Malaysia Open Swimming Championships today.
Hoe Yean, 19, started the day by clinching the men’s 200 metres (m) freestyle gold in 1 min 48.77 seconds at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil.
Representing Kuala Lumpur in the event, he outpaced national Olympian Welson Sim of Sarawak who took the silver in 1:50.07s.
Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal of Terengganu clocked 1:52.14s for the bronze medal.
Hoe Yean and Welson have qualified for the Hanoi SEA Games in Category B after recording under 1:52.01s set by the Malaysian Swimming Federation (MS).
Hoe Yean continued to prove his mettle when he joined the Kuala Lumpur men’s 4x100m freestyle relay quartet with Khiew Tze Yean, Gabriel Francis McCartan and Yap Min Shun to grab the gold in 3:30.16s.
The silver went to Sarawak’s team comprising Welson Sim, Hii Puong Hou, Job Tan Xi Jay and Hii Puong Wei who recorded a time of 3:31.05s.
Meanwhile, Selangor featuring Ng Tze Xiang, Chan Jun Jian, Adam Jeffrey Dillon and Terence Ng came in third for the bronze in 3:34.42s.
“Two more gold medals but more importantly I clocked my best time in the 200m freestyle.
“I actually did not think much about qualifying for the SEA Games in the event but I gave my best and would now concentrate on the remaining events tomorrow,” Hoe Yean told Bernama.
On the first day of the tournament on Thursday, Hou Yean collected two gold medals in the men’s 400m freestyle and the 4x100 medley relay with Khiew Tze Yean, Jayden Tan Khai Xin and Yap Min Shun before raking in another gold on the second day yesterday in the men’s 100m freestyle. – Bernama, March 6, 2022
