KUNAK: Alexia Stella Antonius, 28, won the Sugandoi competition recently held in conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival Kunak district-level here.
In the final round of the competition, Alexia defeated six other competitors. Marvin Primus V. Jinikol, 25, came in second, while John Francis Andam, 34, came in third.
In 2006, Alexia, a Keningau native, was Johan Sugandoi Dazanak Kaamatan at Mukim Apin-Apin, Keningau.
The Kunak district-level Kaamatan Festival this year featured several new events, according to Kunak KDCA Chairman Josue Petrus, including a Gala Night that invited various government agencies, private, associations, and individuals to enliven the dinner with singing performances by seven Sugandoi finalists.
“We also distribute lucky draw tickets to the visitors in attendance to liven up the event,” he said.
Community Development Leader (PPM) Hussin Mohd Rais, Lahad Datu Umno Division Head Khalid Harun, Kunak District Council Executive Officer Mohd Nazri Pintal, and Assistant District Officer Rubert Salimon were also in attendance at the Gala Night.
According to Josue, this year’s Sugandoi Kaamatan gala night was memorable due to the attendance of unexpected visitors, as well as various side events hosted by the Kunak KDCA to entertain the attendees.
“In conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival, we can reconnect face - to - face with our friends and relatives who are far and near. He said, “I am pleased with the Kaamatan Festival committee members’ efforts in making this annual event a success.”
Meanwhile, the Kaamatan Festival’s highlight was the appearance of six Kunak Unduk Ngadau finalists who will represent the district in Penampang.
Local veteran singer Francis Landong from Tambunan also entertained the guests.
