I did not expect the 700 copies of hard cover book of which each contained 538 pages written by a team of MAS retirees entitled “The Malaysia Airlines We Built: The journey of an award-winning international airline. A collection of behind-the-scenes stories” were almost sold out on the launching day at KGNS on 12 April, 2025. Due to demand and the long wait list request from potential buyers, the Publisher, Malaysia Airlines System Retirees Association (MASRA) is contemplating on the suggestion to reprint the 2nd edition of the said book or offer it in the form of e-book. Success at work for most people means a job that is economically and psychologically satisfying, that makes a contribution to society, that supports a healthy personal or family life. This book is about how paths to success at work have been changing over the past four decades, and why. The material is based largely on the work experiences of 80 members of MASRA covering the period 1971-2015.

The classic stories that emerged in the book relates to an important set of changes occuring in the airline business, to individuals who are sometimes controversial, to career paths that will surprise many people, and to a powerful set of economic forces lurking in work background. Although no one would have predicted this 50 years ago, the key factors that have been affecting our actual teamwork.

I realised during more than two years of writing the book, this shift in the economy is altering the nature of managerial work, career paths, the structure & functioning of MAS, management training & development, and much more. At the heart of the story reported in the book is how individuals have experienced this change and how many of them are taking advantage of it for their 2nd & 3rd career.

A scholar, Prof Dato' Sri Dr. Syed Arabi accepted MAS book from Dr. Zul. Whilst examining its contents said “My research activities are based on empirical data.” Photo: Zarina

It is heartwarming that a distinguished academician and former Rector, International Islamic University Malaysia, Professor Dato' Sri Dr. Syed Arabi Idid, has shown keen interest to link his empirical research and academic writing on leadership and communications with real experiences narrated in the MAS book. Thus, this book will soon be placed on the library shelf of IIUM and other universities. (srbidid@gmail.com)

Based on my experience working for the doctoral dissertation, a substantial piece of scholarly research required for my PhD degree, I found empirical research is a scientific approach that uses direct & indirect observation, and measurement of the phenomena to gather evidence and make discoveries. It relies on real-word experience and data rather than relying solely on theories or beliefs. The data collected in empirical research can be used to verify or refute hypotheses.
