Happy New Year YB Sanusi.

We are writing on behalf of our non-Malay brothers and sisters in Kedah who will be drinking and may be wearing bikinis by the swimming pools during the coming Chinese New Year holidays in the comfort of their own homes.

We hope you won't mind because it's New Year after all. Please reassure them that they will be left undisturbed to enjoy the holidays free of raids by state authorities.

My Chinese brothers and sisters do four-digit lottery from outlets in and around Kuala Lumpur hoping to make some money to buy their tickets home.

"Just trying our luck for the year of the Rabbit," said one Hokkien bro when we met near a Chow Kit four-digit lottery shop recently, lamenting that his favourite outlet in Alor Setar near Pekan Rabu is now closed for good.

By the way speaking of rabbits, who knows lady luck might just show us mercy by pulling her own set of magic tricks out of her hat for you and them this year too?

We wish you every success YB, in your pursuit to win all seats in Kedah Dewan Undangan Negeri in the coming state election.

Meanwhile, they shall abide by your rules buying alcohol from Chinese medical halls and tell their women folks to dress modestly when they go out to Pekan China to get supplies like sweetmeats, fortune cookies and kitchen utensils for the New Year.

"Maybe a shawl or a hat would be good enough to cover our fancy hair, don't you think bro?" asked a sister in jest. But they did just that when they were in Pekan Rabu to buy dodol, bahulu kueh bangkit, karas, pulut hitam, petai, krisik and emping to prepare for the New Year celebrations.

What she meant was it would help cover their "aurat", avoiding strange stares and disapproving glances from some of our Muslim brethren who may be unable to lower their gaze.

"We shall not temp them!" promised a sister.

However, by their pools, the women plan to wear bikinis to get a tan under the clear blue skies of Kedah.

Chinese New Year season is always very hot in Kedah and they shall take every advantage possible to get a good tan to show off at the post new year parties when they are back in KL.

"You know something bro, having lived in the UK, I have acquired a taste of gin and tonic in the afternoon by the pool. Besides, they say tonic is anti-malarial!" said this anglophile from Kedah.

By the way, our Chinese brothers also reported that their families have built high walls around their houses to avoid prying the eyes of the neighbours.

Thus by so doing our bikini-clad women and our heavy drinking will go unseen by the community. They'll keep very much to themselves. They promise.

YB my Chinese brothers and sisters want to live in harmony with others in the state and would like to be left alone as law abiding Kedahans, conscious of their civic duties towards others who are from different ethnic groups.

Let's live and let live in this year of the Rabbit, YB!
