When Bung Mokhtar announced the withdrawal of Sabah BN's support for GRS government on Jan 6, it occurred to me that this could happen in the Peninsular too.
Bung's move is unthinkable. But the unthinkable always happens in politics.
For instance, prior to GE15, Zahid and UMNO-BN vowed to never work with Anwar or DAP. Then to the surprise of everyone, the unthinkable happened. Zahid joined Anwar to form a unity government.
Bung demonstrated that UMNO-BN as a coalition, who partners with PH in the federal government, may yet break away at state level, resulting in UMNO Sabah splitting into two camps.
On Jan 7, he met with Barisan chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Kuala Lumpur, accompanied by senior Barisan leaders. But some others openly declared support for Hajiji. Bung was quoted saying, "Every beginning has an end. The struggle has just started and the journey is still long."
Hajiji, who did the unthinkable by walking away from Bersatu, is at press time working hard to ensure he has a majority in the state assembly by entering into a possible coalition with Pakatan Harapan, that has seven assemblymen in Sabah. He is alleged by Bung as being "partyless" since GRS is just a "grand coalition".
Obviously, what started well has now come to an end for Bung and UMNO-BN in Sabah. It is going to take a long time to heal the rift.
Could UMNO-BN split into camps at the federal level too should there be a change in leadership as shown by what took place in Sabah this week? Will one cluster walk away from Anwar leaving another supporting him?
It's unthinkable now, but in politics the unthinkable always seem to happen somehow.
