MANILA, Philippines — Filipina tennis star Alex Eala is set to chase a historic milestone at the 2026 Asian Games, aiming to end a long-standing gold medal drought for the country.
The Philippines has not secured a gold in Asian Games tennis since Johnny Jose defeated Japan’s Michio Miyagi in the men's singles final at the 1962 Jakarta Games.
At just 18 years old during the 2022 Hangzhou Games, Eala previously delivered a dual-bronze performance in both the women’s singles and mixed doubles events. Now 21, her growth and recent achievements have raised expectations for an even bigger breakthrough.
Philippine Tennis Association (PhilTa) Secretary General John Rey Tiangco expressed firm confidence in Eala’s readiness for the challenge, highlighting her continuous improvement and maturity both physically and mentally. Tiangco noted that despite the high expectations and media focus, Eala’s strong support system and determination enable her to navigate the pressure effectively.
Eala enters the tournament boasting momentum from a stellar 2026 campaign, where she solidified her status as Southeast Asia's top-ranked player. She recently achieved a career-high World No. 18 in the WTA rankings following her victory at the 2026 Washington Open. Her impressive run also includes notable wins over Top 10 players, such as Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina at the Berlin Tennis Open, as well as high-profile victories against Maya Joint and defending champion Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon.
Her path to potential gold will likely run through Asia's elite, including China’s Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen, who narrowly edged Eala in a tight semifinal during the 2022 Games before going on to claim the title.
Beyond her performance on the court, PhilTa commended Eala’s dedication to representing the nation. Facing a demanding calendar that includes the US Open, a WTA 500 event in Singapore, and a tournament in Nagoya, Eala prioritized the Asian Games over competing events to wear the national colors.
