Around 20 newly elected AAP councilors on Tuesday converged on the house of Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh and held a closed-door meeting.
Though the agenda of the meeting was kept under wraps, it came at a time when discussions for the Mayor’s post are underway.
State’s ruling AAP had secured victory in 27 of 50 Mohali wards during the civic body elections held recently.
According to sources, a majority of councillors backed Sarabjit Singh Samana, the son of Kulwant Singh.
Meanwhile, many AAP councillors shared social media posts, backing Samana for the Mayor’s post.
Party general secretary Sunny Singh Ahluwalia and Sukhdev Singh Patwari — who became a councillor for the fourth time — are also strong contenders.
Several councillors, on the condition of anonymity, said they backed Samana and would convey their feelings to the senior party leadership.
The MLA had invited the councillors for a breakfast at his house.
District AAP president Prabhjot Kaur also addressed the gathering and congratulated everyone on their victory.
‘Show of strength’
Meanwhile, local politicians saw the meeting as a show of strength by Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh in favour of his Sarabjit Singh Samana. The father-son duo holds a considerable influence among AAP councillors and some Independents. The MLA was reportedly instrumental in getting tickets for his confidantes ahead of the elections.
