PETALING JAYA - Newly elected Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan plans to step down as Malaysia Football League (MFL) president within a month to give his full attention to leading the national football governing body.
Ab Ghani said he did not want to hold both key positions for too long as FAM required his immediate attention, particularly to address various issues and implement reforms during the remainder of the 2025-2029 term.
He said discussions were underway with the relevant parties to identify his successor at MFL and ensure the organisation continues without disruption.
"I will resign, but not immediately, as I want to carry out and complete my duties (as MFL president). Insya-Allah, I will declare my resignation as MFL president soon.
"If possible, I only want to take a month. Insya-Allah, if possible, because I cannot leave MFL without a president,” he told his first press conference as FAM president after the Second FAM Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) here today.
On his successor, Ab Ghani, who was appointed MFL president in August 2021, said several names were already being considered but the matter needed to be further discussed before any announcement was made.
Earlier, Ab Ghani was announced as the new FAM president after securing a majority of votes in the FAM Executive Committee election for the remainder of the 2025-2029 term.
At the EGM election, Ab Ghani secured 20 votes to defeat Football Association of Selangor (FAS) deputy president Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar, who received five votes, in a straight contest for the presidency.
Under Article 33 (2) of the FAM Statutes, the MFL president automatically holds the position of FAM vice-president 2, meaning the position was not contested today.
For the vice-president 1 post, Datuk Seri Rosmadi Ismail was elected with 15 votes, beating Mohd Firdaus Mohamed and Syed Yazid Syed Omar, who received five votes each.
Datuk N. Saaran was elected vice-president 3 after securing 18 votes, while his challenger Afizal Abu Othman received seven. - BERNAMA
