Abdul El-Sayed makes history as first Muslim elected to US Senate

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan's Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers and becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. He is due to take office in January 2027.

The 42-year-old physician, the son of Egyptian immigrants, represents the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. His victory also allows Democrats to retain a Senate seat that had been considered vulnerable.

Speaking to supporters at his election headquarters in Detroit, El-Sayed celebrated the result and thanked voters for backing his campaign. He presented the result as a victory for ordinary voters over wealthy political interests. "We showed that in a battle between the money and the many, that the many really can win," he told supporters.
