
After scrutiny of nomination papers for the Municipal Council and Municipal Panchayat elections in the district on Monday, a total of 447 nomination papers were found valid.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development)-cum-Additional District Election Officer, Jalandhar, Divya P, while giving more information in this regard, said that a total of 452 nominations had been received for 99 wards of five Municipal Councils and two Municipal Panchayats in the district, out of which five nomination papers were found invalid after scrutiny. She said that 53 nomination papers were found valid for Municipal Council Adampur, 55 for Municipal Council Kartarpur, 88 for Municipal Council Nakodar, 64 for Municipal Council Noormahal and 63 for Municipal Council Phillaur.
Similarly, 63 nominations were found valid for Municipal Panchayat Mehatpur and 61 for Municipal Panchayat Lohian Khas. The Additional Deputy Commissioner said that candidates would be able to withdraw their nomination papers till 3 pm on May 19. Voting will take place on May 26, from 8 am to 5 pm and counting of votes will be held on May 29.
50 candidates to contest Garhshankar MC elections
A total of 50 candidates are now in the fray for the elections to the 13 wards of the Garhshankar Municipal Council after the completion of the nomination withdrawal process. Earlier, 61 candidates had filed their nomination papers for the elections. Out of these, one nomination paper was rejected during scrutiny, while 10 candidates withdrew their nominations on the last day of withdrawal.
Among those who withdrew their nominations were Congress candidates Kamaljit Kaur and Avtar Kaur from Ward No 3. With their withdrawal, the Congress party no longer has any candidate contesting from Ward No 3. After the withdrawal process, the electoral battle in all 13 wards has now been finalised with 50 candidates remaining in the contest. The voters of Garhshankar will now decide on May 26 which 13 candidates will be elected as councillors.
SDM Garhshankar Sanjeev Kumar said that election symbols have been allotted to all 50 candidates contesting the civic polls. He added that all necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of the elections have been put in place.
