NAGOYA, Japan - The Malaysian contingent is now just two gold medals away from fulfilling its target of six golds at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, following the eighth day which saw the national camp further strengthen its position through the success and advancement of athletes in several major events.
After the fourth gold was secured by the sepak takraw squad through the men's team regu event yesterday, hopes of achieving the six-gold target are now directed towards several prospects who are still continuing their challenges in the final stages of the games.
The target of six gold medals was set by the contingent before the games began.
S. Sivasangari and Ng Eain Yow stand out as main bets as both successfully advanced to their respective singles finals, thereby opening up opportunities for Malaysia to add two more gold medals from squash as both players are also defending champions who will compete in tomorrow's showdown match.
Despite these positive developments, the national camp also faced some less favourable outcomes, including the mixed doubles squash pair C. Ameenshenraj-Rachel Arnold securing bronze after losing in the semi-finals, while Pandelela Rinong-Nur Eilisha Rania missed the podium after finishing fourth in the women's 10m synchronised platform diving event.
In athletics, attention shifted to Danish Iftikhar Muhammad Roslee, who advanced to the men's 200m final, providing another positive development for the national contingent following several less encouraging results in sprint events.
