Alas lineup intimidating for Taiwan coach

CANDON, Ilocos Sur — Taiwan head coach Teng Yen-Min admitted that the current Alas Pilipinas lineup posed a serious challenge, prompting her squad to prepare extensively ahead of their matchup.

Despite that respect, Taiwan remained unbeaten at 4-0 after sweeping the Philippines, 25-16, 25-14, 25-10, to knock the hosts out of podium contention in the 2026 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Cup on Thursday at the Candon City Arena.

Teng, who previously faced Creamline during the 2022 Invitational Conference while handling KingWhale Taipei, highlighted the strength of the Philippine roster, particularly stars Alyssa Valdez and Alyssa Solomon.

“We focused on playing against the Philippines. This time, I feel that this Philippine national team is very good and stronger,” Teng said. “Many PVL clubs, famous players are included. Today, we did our homework, and we are happy that we won the game.”

The loss was a reversal of fortunes from the 2025 edition, when Alas Pilipinas — then powered by Eya Laure — stunned Taiwan to end a 64-year finals drought.

Taiwan captain Liao-Yi Jen echoed her coach’s sentiments, praising the Filipinas and their supporters.

“I think Alyssa and (Tots) Carlos are still very good players. And thank you, Philippines, because these fans have so much heart,” Liao said. “I always feel happy playing here because of the fans’ energy.”

Taiwan now eyes the top spot in Pool A as it prepares to face South Korea.

Meanwhile in Pool B, Kazakhstan ended defending champion Vietnam’s remarkable 23-game winning streak with a thrilling five-set victory, 18-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13.

Led by Kristina Belova and Zhanna Syroyeshkina, who scored 21 points each, Kazakhstan pulled off the statement win against a Vietnamese side that had been unbeaten since joining the tournament in 2023.

“We prepared hard for Vietnam and made sure the team stayed united and focused,” Belova said. “We’re very happy with the win and look forward to our next match.”
