Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has refuted claims that the Unity Government is soft on corruption, following the Pardons Board's decision to reduce former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's prison sentence and fine. During a gathering with staff of the Prime Minister’s Department in Putrajaya, Anwar addressed the issue, stating that the allegation of laxity on corruption is untrue. He emphasized that the judicial process will proceed without interference and clarified that Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had not given him an ultimatum regarding Najib’s pardon.

Anwar highlighted the Unity Government's priorities, including economic matters and reviewing civil servants' salaries. He stressed that the government's stance against corruption is unwavering and comprehensive, with a focus on investigating and recovering extraordinary wealth to benefit the people.

Anwar urged civil servants to cooperate fully in combating corruption, emphasizing the importance of restoring public trust and the nation's revenue. He emphasized that any recovered funds would be used for the betterment of society, such as eradicating poverty and providing quality education.

Addressing ongoing challenges, Anwar acknowledged that the government is still working to control revenue losses from crude oil and diesel leakages. He noted that there are still pockets of corruption at various levels, including at borders, ports, and tax departments.

Anwar praised the decisive actions taken by enforcement agencies, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), in combating corruption. He also mentioned his firm stance on Spanco, a company holding the concession to supply and maintain government vehicles since 1993. Anwar emphasized the need for investigations into Spanco's operations, citing concerns about regulations and their impact on the country.

The article also mentioned the termination of a contract awarded to a consortium formed by Berjaya Group and Naza Sdn Bhd, which had obtained a letter of intent (LOI) for the contract in 2019. The LOI was terminated in 2020, and the tender was subsequently awarded to Spanco. This development led to a lawsuit filed by Berjaya founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan against the Finance Ministry and Spanco, alleging that the contract was awarded to Spanco despite its higher price. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) opened an investigation into this matter in response to Tan's allegations.

The controversy surrounding Spanco Sdn Bhd, which held the government vehicle supply and maintenance concession since 1993, escalated when an open tender was launched for the next contract after the expiration of Spanco's contract in 2019. A consortium formed by Berjaya Group and Naza Sdn Bhd secured the contract through a letter of intent (LOI) that year. However, the LOI was terminated in 2020, and the tender was eventually awarded to Spanco.

This decision raised eyebrows, especially when Berjaya founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan filed a lawsuit against the Finance Ministry and Spanco, alleging that the contract was awarded to Spanco despite its higher price. This legal action prompted the MACC to launch an investigation into the matter, highlighting concerns about transparency and fair competition in government procurement processes.

The controversy surrounding Spanco and the subsequent legal dispute underscore the challenges faced by the government in ensuring transparency, accountability, and fair competition in its procurement practices. It also highlights the importance of robust regulatory frameworks and effective oversight mechanisms to prevent corruption and ensure the efficient use of public funds.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's firm stance on corruption and commitment to addressing governance issues reflect the government's determination to uphold integrity and accountability in its administration. However, the Spanco controversy serves as a reminder that the fight against corruption requires constant vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard public trust and the nation's resources.
