KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 — Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today alleged Lee Chean Chung had been an absentee leader, failing to attend meetings or even the party congress “for over a year”.
He read that as a sign Lee is uninterested in PKR or its struggle, and that the former Petaling Jaya MP had quit for “sometime”.
Lee announced his resignation as Petaling Jaya MP this morning, a move that followed a three year suspension for insubordination. Lee said he would tender his resignation from PKR this Monday.
“He resigned for some time already and you (press) just know about it now?” Anwar said to reporters after performing Friday prayers at the Royal Malaysian Air Force mosque at Sungai Besi here.
“If he’s not interested fine. We thank you for your service and contribution,” Anwar added.
“He’s not been attending meetings for over a year, not been involved in party affairs. Didn’t even attend the congress.”
Lee is the fourth PKR lawmaker to recently quit as an MP. He told a press conference this morning that he was served a suspension letter on Wednesday evening and alleged had not been given an opportunity to provide an explanation or attend a hearing over the past three months.
The suspension, added Lee, had left him unable to debate or express his position within PKR, while claiming that management of the RM3 million Petaling Jaya constituency allocation had also been taken over through a process lacking transparency.
Asked if Lee’s resignation would have an impact on PKR’s standing in the Petaling Jaya seat, Anwar was dismissive.
“If you want to talk about constituency allocation no it doesn’t. Schools, surau, mosques, roads, all projects will go on as usual. If he wants to give his views he can but it doesn’t mean work in the parliamentary seat stops.”
