Kota Kinabalu: Sabah won three golds, one silver and one bronze as hosts at the recent National Circuit Archery Championship (series one) held here at the Likas Sukma field.

The archers made a clean sweep in the individual compound events with Otto Wong Co Wan taking the men’s title and the women’s title going to Renee Sew, with the other gold medal coming from the men’s recurve team of Ahmad Afiq Akhiroman, Evan Rich Chong Qi Wei and Goh Chun Shen in the Olympics rounds.

The silver came from the women recurve team of Carolyn Chye, Sharon Chung Yi Wen and Ekaputri Aqeela Ali, while the bronze was delivered by Chow Yin Min, Lee Kin Lip and Nathaniel Tan Zhi Wei in the men’s compound event.

Sabah Archery Association (SAA) president Dzulkarnain Datuk Dzulkifli said the five-day competition was a success with some 200 athletes from 12 teams taking part.

Read more He also revealed that they have introduced the 680 and 700 clubs to induct those who managed the score of 680 points (in recurve) and 700 points (in compound) during the tournament.

They will each receive a certificate and cash reward of RM1,000 as Otto Wong Co Wan did in the Sabah Open (series one) in Keningau this year.

He added that cash incentives were also given out for the first time to all medal winners in the tournament.

“As organiser, we have a vision to make Sabah a powerhouse in archery. This will establish Sabah as an archery championship destination and also contribute to the sports tourism sector in the State,” he said.

He hoped by organising the national tournament, it will help to make the sport more popular in the State and as a result more talents will be produced in the future.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Youth and Sports Ministry, Malaysian National Archery Association, Sabah Sports Council, Sabah Sports Board, Sabah Malaysia Sports School, all sponsors and all the State body’s committee for their contribution to the success of the championship.
