Kota Kinabalu: At the International Arbitration Colloquium 2023 event at the Sabah International Convention Centre on Tuesday July 4, over the aftermath of the “Sulu Arbitration” case, Dr Gonzalo Stampa who was appointed as sole arbitrator in 2019 for the Sulu Sultanate heir claimants over the 1878 Agreement, received brickbats from various legal experts, for not disclosing the 2013 Lahad Datu intrusion by armed Sulu militants.
It was because of this armed invasion that caused the deaths of 78 in Malaysian territory of Sabah’s Lahad Datu district by a self-proclaimed “heir” to the Sulu Sultanate who called for the armed incursion to reclaim his lands, that Malaysia stopped the RM5,300 annual payment.
Thus, the Malaysian Government took decisive action in ending its payments.
