Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said 46 Tamu Desa (rural markets) across Sabah had been identified for construction or upgrading this year.
These projects will be implemented across 28 full district offices and sub-districts, with a total allocation of RM10 million under the Rural Market Premises Development allocation by the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives.
During the closing ceremony of the Sabah Madani Rakyat Program in Tawau on May 11, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional allocation of RM10 million to continue the development of Tamu Desa premises in Sabah.
“Taking into account our first-time experience implementing Tamu Desa premises development last year, we have improved governance by requiring that the land status of Tamu Desa sites be verified by district offices to avoid disputes.
“A total of 15 district offices have provided written feedback and verification regarding their respective Tamu Desa sites, confirming no land issues. As such, we issued letters of authority for project procurement to begin.
“As for the remaining districts, we are still awaiting written verification from their district offices before KUSKOP can issue project implementation authority letters,” he said.
Ewon hoped the implementation of the Tamu Desa projects would provide comfortable facilities for rural entrepreneurs and small traders.
In KOTA BELUD, Ewon officiated the opening of three Tamu Desa premises in Kampung Takulung, Lasau, and Rosok.
The three were part of 22 Tamu Desa premises constructed and upgraded under Phase 1 and Phase 2, with a total allocation of RM4.749 million in 2024.
The weekly markets at Tamu Desa Takulung happen every Tuesday, Tamu Desa Lasau every Wednesday, and Tamu Desa Rosok every Thursday.
“In addition to being used by entrepreneurs, this facility can also be used for sports, gatherings, briefings and community meetings,” he said.
He also approved an allocation of RM200,000 for the construction of a new Tamu Desa in Kg Tinata.
The Podos road, which is the main access route to this village, is currently being upgraded and the construction of the Tamu Desa Premises will not only provide a more comfortable trading space for entrepreneurs in this village but also attract more buyers from outside once the road is fully completed,” he said.
