SHAH ALAM - The suspect in a student stabbing case at a secondary school in Banting on Monday is believed to have obtained the knife used in the incident through a purchase on an online sales platform.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the suspect carried the sharp weapon in a bag before entering the school compound through a gate that was open at the time.

"Investigations also found that the suspect used an e-hailing service to get to school on the day of the incident," he said at a press conference at the Selangor Contingent Police Headquarters here on Thursday.

Commenting on whether there were any lapses in the school's security controls, Shazeli said the matter could not be concluded as negligence on the part of security guards.

"It cannot be said to be a lapse on the school's part. This is because we still need to look into whether the gate was open at that time due to someone entering or leaving.

"When the gate was in the process of being opened and possibly in the process of closing, the suspect took the opportunity to enter the school compound," he said.

He also confirmed receiving information that the suspect is a person with disabilities (PwD) cardholder under the autism category, though this is still under further investigation with relevant parties.

"We are also looking into the possible influence of social media on the suspect's thinking and behaviour," he said.

He said the suspect had also reportedly not attended school for about eight months and had been homeschooled following health issues she faced.

"The suspect was previously involved in an incident of falling from a school building at the end of last year," he said.

On the suspect's family background, Shazeli said the teenager is believed to have issues with emotional distress and depression, though the actual cause is still being assessed by experts and is subject to further investigation.

In the incident at about 9.30am on Monday, a Form Three female student suffered injuries to several parts of her body after allegedly being stabbed by the suspect at the school compound with a knife.

Kuala Langat district police chief Superintendent Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi was reported as saying the suspect had been remanded for four days until Friday for investigation under Section 307 of the Penal Code.
