Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is delighted being named Germany captain.
Gundogan will lead Germany in their friendly against Japan.
He said, "I am happy for the trust.
"It is a great honor for me and I am aware of the responsibility that I will have especially towards the younger ones."
The decision was a surprise, with many expecting Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich to get the nod.
