Cruyff has approached Barca president Joan Laporta and requested an extended break so he can reflect on whether the wants to continue in the job.
Barca sporting director Mateu Alemany is already leaving at the end of next month to take charge of Aston Villa.
Former Barca striker Jordi could yet follow Alemany out of the club as he considers his place in their new-look management structure.
Cruyff is set to spend several weeks away from Barca and consider his options.
