BEAUFORT: The suspension bridge leading to a resident’s home in Kg Galila Jaya, Padas Damit, which was initially built using palm trunks, has now been upgraded.

The improvements were carried out through a gotong-royong by the villagers.

Resident, Ismail Gedon thanked Daily Express for highlighting the issue in a recent report.

The bridge had been in disrepair for nearly six years, with its flooring completely damaged. Ismail previously raised the issue with local representatives but received no assistance until recently.

The bridge has since been upgraded with a stronger infrastructure, including an iron floor, alleviating residents’ concerns about its safety.

Villagers also thanked Lumadan Assemblyman Datuk Ruslan Muaharam, who also serves as an Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department, for promptly addressing the issue and upgrading the bridge.

“We are relieved now that the bridge has been upgraded. It is much safer and more comfortable to use,” said Ismail.

He said the improvements are especially timely with upcoming wedding celebrations, making it easier for families to visit one another.

The bridge was repaired through a gotong-royong using split palm trunks, as it is the primary access route for guests attending a villager’s wedding this month.

“We had no choice but to repair the bridge ourselves because we did not receive any government funding. The community came together to make it happen,” Ismail said.

Despite limited resources, the villagers managed to construct a temporary solution by splitting palm trunks to create a makeshift floor for the bridge.

Ismail noted that there is no alternative route to the area, making the bridge the only access point for residents and visitors.
