Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has confirmed that he did not attend a preliminary meeting held at Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s residence, saying he was never formally invited to the session.
Hamzah clarified that his absence was not a matter of choice but a consequence of protocol, stressing that participation in such high-level discussions requires an official invitation. Without one, he said, there was no basis for him to be present at the gathering.
He made the clarification while speaking to reporters at the Dewan Rakyat on January 29, following widespread reports that a scheduled Perikatan Nasional (PN) Supreme Council meeting had been cancelled and replaced with an informal pre-meeting at Muhyiddin’s home.
The preliminary session was described as an initial discussion among selected party leaders aimed at assessing the coalition’s direction ahead of formal deliberations by the Supreme Council. The development came amid ongoing internal changes within PN, particularly surrounding leadership positions at the coalition level.
According to earlier confirmations by PAS leaders, the gathering was linked to preparations for formalising Muhyiddin’s resignation as PN chairman and initiating the process of appointing a successor. The Supreme Council meeting, which was initially expected to address these matters directly, was postponed in favour of the smaller, closed-door discussion.
Hamzah’s disclosure has drawn attention to sensitivities within PN as it navigates a leadership transition marked by procedural concerns and internal coordination. As Bersatu’s deputy president, his exclusion from the preliminary talks has raised questions about communication practices and inclusivity within the coalition’s decision-making process.
Political observers note that such developments reflect the delicate balance PN must manage as it restructures its leadership while maintaining cohesion among component parties. The emphasis on formal invitations and clear processes highlights the importance placed on protocol during a period of internal recalibration.
Hamzah’s remarks also underline the broader challenges facing PN as it attempts to present a unified front amid leadership changes. With discussions on succession and structural adjustments ongoing, adherence to established procedures is seen as critical to preventing further friction within the alliance.
