TAIPING – Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) remains a member of Perikatan Nasional (PN) to this day, said PN Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
However, he stated that Bersatu’s position within the coalition is currently under review following reports lodged by several Bersatu Members of Parliament with the Malaysia Registery of Societies (RoS) regarding the legitimacy of the party’s leadership committee.
According to him, PN takes note of the matter and will observe the extent to which the legitimacy of Bersatu’s leadership is challenged by the RoS.
“As of today, Aug 9, Bersatu is still a member of PN.
“Although the issue of Bersatu’s presence in PN might be somewhat unique due to reports made by several of Bersatu’s own MPs to the ROS regarding the legitimacy of the Bersatu leadership committee’s position,” he told reporters.
He said this after officiating the 23rd Perak Pas Convention at the Perdana Hotel here on Sunday.
Also present was Perak Pas Commissioner Datuk Idris Ahmad, who is also Pas Vice-President.
Media previously reported that Pas President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang claimed Bersatu was automatically expelled from PN following the party’s intention to form a new coalition.
According to Hadi, based on the constitution, any party that decides to join or establish another alliance automatically forfeits its membership without requiring any official letter or specific decision.
However, Bersatu Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali stressed that Hadi has no right or veto power to determine the party's position in PN.
Azmin said the claim that Bersatu’s membership in PN had been automatically revoked was baseless and showed that Hadi did not understand the PN Constitution.
Meanwhile, Samsuri said that there are currently no specific discussions within PN regarding Bersatu’s position, as the coalition’s priority is to secure as many seats as possible in upcoming elections, particularly in Melaka.
“I believe the number one priority in Perikatan Nasional right now is ensuring we win as many seats as possible in the elections, especially the most immediate one in Melaka, and naturally at the Federal level.
“So there is nothing else on the agenda to be discussed besides that,” he said.
Commenting on claims by Bersatu Information Chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz that the PN Chairman was seemingly acting as a 'puppet', Samsuri, who is also Pas Vice-President, said that it was up to those making such statements.
“That is up to them, I cannot stop what they want to say.
“Whatever they wish to say, that is their right,” he said.
