Craving something different from your usual nasi lemak or kaya toast? Here are some of the best English muffins in KL and PJ, available well beyond the usual breakfast hours.
Breakfast in Malaysia rarely needs an introduction. Nasi lemak stalls queue up before sunrise, kaya toast comes paired with soft boiled eggs and a dash of white pepper, and roti canai gets torn apart with curry banjir coating the entire flatbread. It is a morning routine most of us know by heart. But every so often, the craving runs in a different direction entirely, towards something fluffier and more Western.
Then comes the English muffin, that humble, nooked and crannied bread that has somehow become an obsession among KL and PJ’s cafe crowd. Split, toasted and piled high with everything from runny poached eggs to whipped butter and jam, a proper English muffin is the kind of thing that makes a slow morning feel a little more indulgent.
The best part is that you no longer have to wake up at dawn to get your hands on one. Plenty of spots around the Klang Valley now serve their muffins well past the usual breakfast cut off, whether you are after a leisurely brunch or a midday pick me up.
We went looking for the cafes and bakeries doing English muffins properly, the ones that get the texture right, balance their toppings well and do not skimp on flavour just because it is not peak breakfast hour.
Below are the places worth detouring to, wherever you are in KL or PJ and whatever time the clock says.

Rise & GrindTucked inside Kimpton Naluria Kuala Lumpur, Rise & Grind is an all-day espresso bar that takes its coffee just as seriously as its food, using modern brewing methods and quality beans across the board. Their English muffins are some of the best in the city, ranging from a classic breakfast sandwich to something with more of a punch. If you fancy a bit of heat, go for the gochujang grilled chicken muffin. Wash it down with their Milkyway Classic blend or an White Peach Oolong Milk Tea.

BEAMINGView this post on Instagram
BEAMING has won over KL’s food crowd by taking a familiar breakfast staple and turning it into something close to art. Best known as a pop-up at Transparent Coffee, the cafe makes its English muffins entirely from scratch, with a griddled crust giving way to a soft, pillowy centre. The one to order is the English Muffin with Chicken Patty, made with a juicy house-made chicken sausage, a perfectly cooked egg, melted cheese, and a tangy kick from house-made pickles and spicy mayo. Pair it with a hand-brewed filter coffee from Transparent Coffee for the full effect.

ALTA CafeThis sunlit Bangsar favourite first built its following on social media thanks to a breakfast menu built around homemade English muffins, with the salt beef muffin leading the charge. The Brunch Brioche, with sausage patty, fried egg, cheddar and chilli aioli, is well worth ordering too, even if it tends to get overshadowed by the popular ALTABURGER. For something different, the Alta Fish Burger, made with panko fried seabass, tartar sauce and cheddar, is another strong pick.

VCRVCR’s take on the English muffin is a more elevated version of a fast food breakfast favourite. Expect a house-baked muffin filled with a chicken patty, avocado mash, cheddar and a sunny side up egg, sometimes swapped for a rich duck egg for extra creaminess. While you are there, do not skip the Soft Shell Crab Burger, a whole deep-fried crab packed into a soft sesame bun.
