From popular chains to family-run eateries, read on to find some of the best spots to enjoy authentic nasi kandar in KL and PJ today.
Nasi kandar is undoubtedly one of Malaysia’s most cherished dishes, deeply embedded in the country’s rich culinary heritage. Originating in 19th-century Penang, this meal traces its roots to the Indian Muslim, or Mamak, communities.
The name ‘nasi kandar’ comes from the Malay words nasi (rice) and kandar (a shoulder pole), referring to how early vendors carried pots of rice and curries on poles across their shoulders. These street hawkers played a vital role in introducing the dish, which gradually evolved as Indian Muslim flavours blended with local Malay influences.

As Penang flourished as a key trading hub during British colonial rule, nasi kandar gained widespread popularity, transforming from a humble street food into a beloved national dish. Over time, makeshift stalls gave way to well-established restaurants, and the tradition of choosing from an array of curries and side dishes—such as fried chicken, beef rendang, squid curry, omelettes, and vegetables—remained intact.
Today, nasi kandar stands as a symbol of Malaysia’s multicultural identity, renowned for its bold flavours and historical significance. While it originated in Penang, nasi kandar is now a staple across the country, especially in KL and PJ.
