SHAH ALAM - Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has questioned the competence of the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) and the National Sports Council (MSN) following national track cyclist Datuk Azizulhasni Awang's revelations about the institutions' attitude.
Dr Akmal said that no matter how outstanding an athlete may be, poor and incompetent management would end up costing the country its sporting assets.
"It got to the point where the athlete himself had to write a lengthy letter before MSN gave a response.
"Better to lose a minister like this than to lose an athlete who has done so much for the country," he said in a Facebook post on Sunday.
Previously, Azizulhasni described KBS and MSN as unprofessional and inefficient for taking up to two months and five days to give a concrete decision on his services for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games qualification mission.
In a nine-page explanation posted on social media yesterday, the former world champion said the delay had made it difficult for him to plan his career direction, including preparations for an important race offering qualification points for LA28.
Dr Akmal added that the government must not let the minister's sluggishness and incompetence in management ultimately cost the country more talented athletes.
