Panic gripped the area around the Majitha road police station on Saturday night after a loud explosion-like sound triggered rumours of a grenade attack there.
The incident occurred around 11.45 pm, causing alarm among residents, attendants of patients at the nearby Guru Nanak Dev Hospital and passers-by.
As the news of blast spread, speculation mounted that alleged terrorists had targeted the police station with a grenade. Several persons informed their relatives and acquaintances, leading to widespread concern in the area while mediapersons also reached there.
At the time of the incident, SHO Rakesh Kumar was conducting vehicle checking at a naka a short distance away from the police station. Hearing the loud sound, he rushed to the spot along with police personnel and initiated an investigation.
After a thorough inspection, the police found that the explosion-like sound had been caused by the bursting of the front tyre and tube of an old PCR motorcycle parked in the police station.
Rakesh Kumar said no explosive device was used and that the incident was purely accidental.
